The event brought people together in solidarity with the communities affected by the devastating floods in Nepal. Participants walked and ran to raise awareness, show compassion, and support Nepal during this difficult time. Following the Run/Walk, Himalayan Yak Restaurant provided a special buffet for $25 per person. Who was once allowed to become an American citizen—and who was excluded? At a special trial reenactment event in Palisades Park, KACE interns revisited two landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases: Ozawa v. United States and United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind. Presented under the theme “Race, Color, and Citizenship: Ozawa and Thind,” the reenactment examined how race and racial classifications were historically used to determine eligibility for U.S. citizenship. Through courtroom arguments and historical interpretation, the interns brought these important cases to life and encouraged the audience to consider how law, identity, immigration, and belonging have shaped American history. Supporters of the legislation point to evidence that Asian Americans can face an elevated risk of diabetes at lower BMI levels, meaning individuals who may not be considered overweight under traditional BMI standards could still be at significant risk.
