What begins as a childhood dream can sometimes lead all the way to the stars. KCMB-TV interviewed a Principal Staff Scientist with the James Webb Space Telescope Science Operations Team at the Space Telescope Science Institute. He shared how watching Star Wars at seven years old inspired him to become an astronomer—even before he fully understood what astronomy was. That early fascination eventually led him to study astronomy in college and earn a doctoral degree in the field. During the interview, he explained the difference between engineers who design and build telescopes and scientists who help operate them, maintain their scientific performance, and analyze the data they collect. As part of the JWST science operations community, his work helps researchers use telescope data to study distant stars, galaxies, planets, and the history of our universe. He also introduces the James Webb Space Telescope, one of the most powerful space observatories ever created, and explains how its observations are expanding our understanding of the cosmos. This inspiring conversation shows how childhood curiosity, education, and perseverance can develop into a meaningful scientific career. It also encourages young people who are interested in astronomy, space exploration, engineering, and data science to continue asking questions and following their dreams. #KCMBTV, #JamesWebbSpaceTelescope, #JWST, #SpaceTelescopeScienceInstitute, #STScI, #Astronomy, #Astronomer, #SpaceScience, #SpaceExploration, #Universe, #NASA, #ScienceOperations, #TelescopeData, #DataAnalysis, #STEM, #STEMEducation, #FutureScientists, #ChildhoodDream, #StarWars, #InspiringJourney, #HyoseonLee, #SujinKim, #GyuhoChoi

Artist Mison Kim has loved drawing for as long as she can remember. Art felt like destiny—it was the one path she continued thinking about throughout her childhood and college years. However, after arriving in the United States, she began questioning everything she had learned about painting. This realization led her to unlearn old methods, explore new approaches, and continually reconsider what she truly wanted to express as an artist. In this KCMB-TV interview, Mison Kim introduces her Brooklyn exhibition, “Now, And Then, And Again,” and shares the personal experiences behind her work. She explains why she believes masterpieces can emerge from ordinary life and how her paintings reveal everyday experiences from unexpected angles. The exhibition explores a recurring rhythm of life: daily actions produce outcomes, every outcome brings change, and each change becomes another beginning. Through constant questioning, reflection, and reinvention, Mison Kim transforms her personal journey into art. KCMB-TV Founder & Executive Director Gyuho Choi attended the exhibition in Brooklyn, where KCMB-TV filmed the artwork and interviewed the artist. On August 18, 2026, New York State Senator John Liu, Assembly Member Ron Kim, healthcare professionals, patients, and community organizations gathered on the steps of the Flushing Library to call on Governor Kathy Hochul to sign legislation addressing diabetes screening for Asian Americans. The legislation, S634B/A1206B, passed both houses of the New York State Legislature and would require health insurance coverage for diabetes screenings at lower Body Mass Index (BMI) thresholds for Asian Americans. Supporters of the legislation point to evidence that Asian Americans can face an elevated risk of diabetes at lower BMI levels, meaning individuals who may not be considered overweight under traditional BMI standards could still be at significant risk. The rally brought together elected officials, physicians, healthcare organizations, patients, and Asian American community organizations to emphasize the importance of earlier screening, prevention, and equitable access to healthcare. According to the event organizers, approximately 800,000 adults in New York City are living with diabetes, including 13% of Asian/Pacific Islander adults. On Friday, July 17, 2026, the AAPI New Jersey Asian American Leadership Summit brought together advocates, policymakers, educators, students, and community leaders at Princeton University. Marleina shared a powerful reminder: every number in a database represents a real person. Each person has a story, faces different circumstances, and experiences government policies in a different way. For government to serve communities effectively, lawmakers must look beyond statistics and understand the complete stories behind them. Her background in social work has deeply influenced how she approaches policy. It taught her to recognize that everyone is dealing with unique challenges that may not be visible in a chart or report. This perspective helps her place dignity, lived experience, and human needs at the center of policy analysis. Marleina also explained that taxes can be a powerful tool for good when public revenue is used responsibly to support schools, healthcare, transportation, housing, and other essential services. She views an automatic promise of “no new taxes” as a warning sign because it may prevent an honest discussion about what communities need and how those needs will be funded. Her message to legislators is clear: learn the whole story before making decisions. Numbers provide important information, but compassionate and effective policies begin by understanding the people those numbers represent. #KCMBTV, #HyoseonLee, #SujinKim, #LydiaLee, #MarleinaUbel, #NJPolicy, #NewJerseyPolicyPerspective, #AAPINewJersey, #AAPINJSummit, #PeopleCenteredPolicy, #PublicPolicy, #SocialJustice, #HumanDignity, #DataWithPurpose, #TaxPolicy, #AAPILeadership, #AsianAmericanVoices, #CommunityAdvocacy

On Friday, July 17, 2026, the AAPI New Jersey Asian American Leadership Summit brought together leaders, advocates, educators, students, and volunteers at Princeton University to strengthen Asian American voices, representation, and civic participation. The volunteers also emphasized that meaningful change happens when people reunite around a common purpose. Although individuals may come from different countries, cultures, generations, and personal experiences, progress becomes possible when differences are set aside and people work toward shared goals. For these volunteers, being surrounded by the Asian American community created a strong sense of connection and belonging. Their message was simple but powerful: unity is key. No matter where we come from, we can educate one another, participate in elections, and work together to build a stronger and more inclusive future. This interview reminds us that democracy becomes stronger when communities are informed, involved, and united. Every conversation can educate someone, every vote can make a difference, and every person has a role in creating change. #KCMBTV, #HyoseonLee, #SujinKim, #LydiaLee, #AAPIVolunteers, #AAPINewJersey, #AAPINJSummit, #AsianAmericanLeadership, #AAPIUnity, #CommunityVoices, #CivicEngagement, #VoterEducation, #GetOutTheVote, #EveryVoteMatters, #AsianAmericanVoices, #CommunityService, #VolunteerVoices, #StrongerTogether, #PrincetonUniversity, #YouthMedia

On Friday, July 17, 2026, the AAPI New Jersey Asian American Leadership Summit brought together community leaders, advocates, educators, and young people at Princeton University to strengthen AAPI representation and leadership. Felicia shared that education is about creating an environment where students encounter diverse people, perspectives, and experiences. These experiences can influence how young people understand themselves, their communities, and the world around them. Although Felicia eventually left the classroom, she never left behind her identity as an educator. She continues to educate and advocate for young people through policy work designed to create greater equity and representation for AAPI children and families. Her experience as a teacher taught her how to listen, communicate, recognize the different needs of young people, and turn their experiences into meaningful action. Today, she carries those lessons into her advocacy, showing that teaching can continue far beyond the walls of a classroom. #KCMBTV, #HyoseonLee, #SujinKim, #LydiaLee, #FeliciaSingh, #CACF, #AAPINewJersey, #AAPINJSummit, #AsianAmericanLeadership, #AAPIAdvocacy, #AAPIYouth, #EducationEquity, #PolicyAdvocacy, #YouthEmpowerment, #AsianAmericanVoices, #CommunityLeadership, #PrincetonUniversity, #YouthMedia

On Friday, July 17, 2026, the AAPI New Jersey Asian American Leadership Summit brought together leaders, advocates, educators, students, and community members at Princeton University to strengthen Asian American voices and representation. KCMB-TV Youth Media & Communications Fellow Hyoseon Lee interviewed Roslyne Shiao, Co-Executive Director of AAPI New Jersey, about the organization’s mission and its three interconnected pillars: advocacy, education, and community. Roslyne explained that advocacy means bringing Asian Americans together to defend their rights, increase representation, and create meaningful change. Education supports this work by helping schools incorporate AAPI history and experiences into K–12 curriculum, ensuring that young people can see their communities represented in the classroom. The third pillar, community, creates opportunities for Asian Americans to gather, celebrate their identities, and experience joy together. It reminds us that building a stronger community is not only about fighting injustice—it is also about creating belonging, connection, and unity. These three pillars depend on one another. Advocacy creates change, education builds understanding, and community gives people the strength to move forward together. #KCMBTV, #HyoseonLee, #SujinKim, #LydiaLee, #RoslyneShiao, #AAPINewJersey, #AAPINJSummit, #AsianAmericanLeadership, #AAPIRepresentation, #Advocacy, #AAPIEducation, #AAPICommunity, #AsianAmericanVoices, #CommunityLeadership, #PrincetonUniversity, #YouthMedia, #TeachAsianAmericanStories

On Friday, July 17, 2026, the AAPI New Jersey Asian American Leadership Summit brought together community leaders, advocates, educators, students, and emerging changemakers at Princeton University. The summit provided a space to exchange ideas, strengthen community connections, and explore ways to advance equity and representation. During the summit, KCMB-TV Youth Media Fellow Hyoseon Lee interviewed Dr. Arati Kreibich, Assistant Secretary of AAPI New Jersey, about how advocacy and education can create meaningful change. Dr. Kreibich explained that her mission centers on advocacy and education—helping community members understand important issues and empowering them to participate in decisions that affect their lives. She discussed AAPI New Jersey’s advocacy for state funding that supports healthier communities, as well as its efforts to help educators implement AAPI history and experiences in school curricula. The conversation also highlighted the importance of language access. When public information, educational materials, and essential services are available in the languages community members understand, more families can participate, receive assistance, and make their voices heard.
